HammerDown! Basketball Journal - By Bobby Gerould - Rocklin, CA.

11/30/03 ...I just returned from watching the Kings rip apart the New Jersey Nets. 21 assisted baskets in the first half for Sacramento. ...Most colorful NBA announcer? The question came up recently. Among analysts the nod goes to Calvin Murphy. By the way, I would also say the best on-air chemistry is between Murphy and his play by play partner Bill Worrell. These two have genuine fun on every broadcast. Just when you think the telecast will dissolve into a frat party they rein it in, and call the game. Certainly, Tom Tolbert and Jerry Reynolds are on the list of color guys with a good sense of enthusiasm. And Tolbert and Reynolds also add substance with their knowledge of the league. Murphy is more prone to hyperbole, but the question was strictly who is the most colorful? While on announcers, and while keeping it positive, here are some thoughts on guys we appreciate. ... Walt "Clyde" Frazier. The more I listen to Frazier on Knicks games, the more I like him and appreciate him. The thesaurus is put to use when Frazier adds his two cents. Yet he always is constructive in his criticism, and often poetic in his cadence. His flow is like a old school rapper, with hall of fame street credibility. Frazier is cool but comfy. He doesn't overreact to anything on the court, and he shies away from bashing referees. ...Marv Albert - Marv is taken for granted. He is unflappable and blends seamlessly into any broadcast. With Frazier, or Fratello, Marv simply calls the game and gives just enough humor to not be an annoyance. I never get a sense of "hey look at me" when Marv is doing his thing. ...Tiring quickly of talking announcers so here is a short list of others I dig. Jack "Goose" Givens, Greg Kelser, Tony Fiorintino, Kevin Calabro, Bill Rafftery, Spero Dedes, Eddie Johnson, Steve "Snapper" Jones, Ralph Lawlor, Ron Boone, Len Elmore, Brad Nessler.

11/29/03 ...The completed trade between Chicago and Toronto is unbelievable to me. David Aldredge of ESPN confirmed the deal. Toronto all but left the Bulls with their pants down getting Jalen Rose (30 years old), Lonny Baxter (24), and Donyell Marshall (30) for Jerome Williams (30), Chris Jeffries (23), and Antonio Davis (35). Oh my. The Raptors are getting three talented NBA players with room to spare in their careers for a hustling scrapper in Williams, a marginal NBA player in Jeffries, and Antonio Davis well into the downside of his run. Some say Marshall is not a winner, and Rose is a malcontent. Those are easy things to say when a team loses. But Marshall and Rose didn't have much control over their time in Chicago. So, anyone who thinks Rose and Marshall are just "not winners" is dumb. The Bulls with their rotation under Bill Cartwright did not have a chance to win. The mix under Cartwright was 24 minutes for everyone including young ineffective players, leaving Rose and Marshall without support. The NBA is too good for that. It IS a game of inches and percentages, and you must play them correctly or you will lose. Sure, no sane man will confuse Marshall with a warrior like Ron Artest. However, Marshall is highly skilled, and he can be effective. Baxter is a longtime favorite of ours. He plays hard, and never takes a bad shot. He blocks shots, and rebounds. He shoots a good percentage from both the floor and the line. Rose is a guy that I think has been overbilled. That is to say, many think he's a superstar. I think he is not a superstar but a very nice pro that can really score, and is also clutch. Rose is coming off a 40% shooting season which was his worst since he began playing significant minutes in the NBA. He was also playing along side two young point guards in Jay Williams, and Jamal Crawford. I still can't believe this deal. Where is A. Davis in two years at age 37? Jeffries has not been a factor. He might be in the D League in two years. For that matter, JYD (Williams)? In two years, JYD will be the same age as Rose and Marshall but Rose sure seems younger. Also JYD is a liability at the free throw line. Don't twist though, JYD is a good player. He will hustle and be loved in Chicago. Wow. I rate this one as a HUGE advantage for Toronto. Chicago gets the thumbs down, hard.

11/27/03 ...Happy Thanksgiving. ...That was the "washed-up" Dikembe Mutombo beating the Celtics in Boston, and then shutting down the Target Center in Minneapple to lead the Knicks past the Wolves. Who called him washed up? Tommy Heinsohn. ...I would like to know the Celtics record since Jeri Welsch started playing significant minutes. I still don't see what many others claim to see with Welsch.

11/26/03 ...Orlando signed Rod Strickland. Good move. Strickland was the best free-agent point guard available. He can help them win some games. It's just a shame that it took a coach being dismissed, and a record string of losing to make this move occur. We noted on October 2 (before any pre-season games), that Strickland would be a step-up for Orlando. ...Scott Skiles is the man in Chicago. Scott, see directly below.

11/25/03 ...Billy Cartwright is out as Coach in Chicago. Big Bill, I always thought, played too many guys. There was seldom a flow to the Bulls, and roles seemed to change weekly. Here is the TRUTH. The Bulls will not win with any consistency until Kendall Gill and Kirk Hinrich play less minutes. Marcus Fizer needs starters minutes. Put Pippen at the point. Crawford, while a great ballhandler, is more of a scorer than distributor. Eddy Curry needs to be in better shape. Play Donyell Marshall as many minutes a night as possible. Make Marcus Fizer and Marshall more three than four which can open up a Tyson Chandler, Curry, Lonny Baxter big man rotation. Pippen, Jalen Rose, Crawford are your three guard mix. Play Corie Blount, Eddie Robinson, Gill, and Hinrich spot minutes in decided games or in case of injury to another player. ...Count me as a fan of Kit on Cold Pizza.

11/24/03 ...ESPN is reporting that Alonzo Mourning's career is over effective immediately. The center will need a kidney transplant. This especially sad news reminds us again how valuable our time is. If you can, do what you want, and smile doing it.

11/23/03 ...Atta boy to NBA-TV's Rick Kamla for doing his hosting gig with flu-like symptoms. ...I've been around hoop all my life. My Dad, Gary Gerould is the radio voice of the Sacramento Kings, and before the NBA came to town, Dad would take me with him to Sac State ball games, the March of Dimes tourney, high-school matches, anything where the competition was good. Before there was a McDonald's High-School All-American game, we took in a rare high-school all-star game that featured senior Bill Cartwright. I wanted to play basketball more than anything but I never made it past 5'6" and the JV high school team. My glory days were in elementary school when I was a Pepsi Hot Shot.

Those were the days! At Disneyland in 1976, I rocked the O.J. jersey and the sweatband on the right wrist! Dad, and sister, Beth sandwich me.

Being the son of a broadcaster, I am interested in all things media, and consider myself an expert specifically in sports TV and radio second guessing. : ))) However, I try to keep it positive within the pages of BasslineSpin.com. This web site is the creative outlet for my musings on whatever I want to speak about without any thought of offending someone corporate.

You can call it what you want to. I call it the BasslineSpin.com

11/22/03 ...I am sure that he just does not know, but Bobby Cremins as a color commentator on the Duke / Detroit-Mercy game speculated on an injury to Titan guard R. Harris. "I don't like the way that wrist looks", said the old coach. There are many reasons why you don't do that. Most importantly is out of respect for family and friends watching the game. What does that mean anyway? Is a bone sticking out that he can see and we can't? You assume the worst as a viewer when the person in the seat of credibility says it doesn't look good. You learn that very quickly in the dangerous world of auto racing. But the rule always applies. Never speculate on an injury. As it turns out the kid came back and played. AND... He was wrong talking about Jerry McNamara at Syracuse, calling him "Mackmahan". Also coach, please refer to Shavlik Randolph as "Randolph" not "Shav". As decent as Randolph looked, he's not in the rarefied air of one namers like Isiah, Lebron, (DeSagana) : ))) -

11/21/03 ...Jim Barnett said "buttocks" on the Warriors - Heat telecast. ...Texas Tech freshman point guard Jarrius Jackson was very impressive, as was JC transfer Mookie Works. Jackson was poised beyond description. ...DePaul's Sammy Meija also looked good. ...I wanted to see the NBDL boxscore for their opening game but it was not available. You knew they had a problem because there were only team totals and the number of minutes was different for the two squads. That of course is impossible. I used to keep stats at NBA Pro-Am Summer League Games in Sacramento and you always have to make sure your totals add up. ...It looks obvious to me that Jason Richardson has stepped up his game in Oakland. Perhaps his NBA maturity has finally caught up with his crazy athletic ability. ...The end of the Seattle/Memphis game was joke with NBA refs making a mistake that gave the Sonics a desperation shot with .6 seconds left. It should have never come to that as time expired when Ronald Murray touch the ball on the prior inbound. It ended up harmless but could have been a disaster if Seattle hit a miracle shot. As it is, it took three minutes to play six tenths of s second.

11/18/03 ...Everyone rejoice! The NBDL is playing pre-season games vs. major college programs. I like it! Missouri beat Ashville, but Maryland fell to the mighty Roanoke Dazzle. Huntsville lost to Purdue. ...I've never heard Lamar Odom as confident as he was following a Heat win in Seattle. "Im in the best shape of my life, I could play another game", he told Mike Fratello and Eric Reid. ...Terry Porter, you need Toni Kukoc on the floor more than 18 minutes. ...Scott Williams was back in the Suns lineup. ...Maybe I should repeat that Caron Butler must still be hurting. He has been awful in the minutes he's played this season. Usually when that is the case, a guy rushing back to help the team, he will risk further serious injury. I am not a doctor but I can't help but feel in my gut that someone should step in and tell Caron to rest. ...Bostjan Nachbar hasn't been to the line in 150 minutes so far in Houston.

Off my chest. Let it go... The one TV/Radio critic who blasted me in my Kings Radio days was later fired from the Sacramento Bee for reporting on San Francisco Giants games that he was not attending. He listened one night after a typical Kings loss in Los Angeles to the Lake. I am sensitive, but I knew this cat had not really been hearing my shows. He caught me on a night when I wanted to and should have slammed the coach. Instead, I chose the company line and it sounded wishy-washy which he blasted me for. It hurt because the dude was an old friend of the family.

11/17/03 ...Amare Stoudamire has one assist this season. ...Spero Dedes, I think you are very good but you have got to look at your monitor, dawg. The NBA Insiders realignment segment was not close between graphics and what you were saying. In a situation like realignment where you need a visual (graphic) to help it sink in, the fact that the words and screen didn't match was very confusing. That being said, I believe Spero is the brightest young TV talent for basketball that I've seen in a long time. ...Reports out of Orlando say Doc Rivers days are numbered. Again, I stress that the ROSTER is the problem. Sure, the offense looks shoddy, and I do think you have to run some plays for Drew Gooden but they need a more efficient point guard, and they need some more guys that can score. Free agent Chris Massie can score in the post. Rod Strickland is the point guard they need. Ty Lue should be coming off the bench. The Magic are the only team I have charted in the NBA that does not have a guard with an efficiency rating above .400 (that's assuming you call McGrady a three - though I know he could can play two). Ty Lue .354, Keith Bogans .245, Shammond Williams .350, Reece Gaines .226, Jeryl Sasser .270, and Gordan Giricek .344. ...Here are three guards with an efficiency rating above .400 that are free agents Rod Strickland .431, Tierre Brown .410, Chris Carr .450. ...

11/16/03 ...What's the word thunderbird? Sacramento area heads are blessed to have Scott Howard-Cooper and Martin McNeal on the NBA beat. Howard-Cooper's weekly Sunday column in the Bee should be required reading for any media types nationwide. McNeal's understanding of the game and his experience of the "bigger picture" of an entire NBA schedule is always appreciated. "Marty" seldom overreacts in his writing and analysis of the Kings. ...Just some overdue love for those two.

...There is one thing I hate about weekends. The lame basketball coverage on TV because of all the football talk. ESPN News showed a 3-5 second clip of Michael Redd hitting a three point shot while they flashed a graphic with the score and then went to commercial. Of course I already know the score and can get full highlights on NBA TV, it's just the principle of it. ...My friends say that I must promote myself more. I'm not much into that. I'm hoping that word of mouth will bring intelligent readers to this site. ... In 1998 I decided to make a concerted effort to scout college basketball players. Always interested in the NBA Draft since I witnessed Joe Axelson (live at the Woodlake Inn) tab Joe Kleine as the Sacramento Kings draft pick in 1985, I kept notes and taped games, scouting mostly through TV. The obsession grew and I began issuing "draft reports" in 1999. Since then I have suggested some really dumb stuff but I have also lobbied passionately (to my wife, a few Internet readers, and a group of selected NBA execs) for the selections of some players that make me look downright prophetic. I sent my first draft report to Danny Ainge (then coah in Phoenix) and Jerry Reynolds. Since, I have included Wizards head coach Eddie Jordan and Pistons assistant Mike Woodson. The point is, if in a healthy discussion of players, say with a coaching staff, my opinion couldn't hurt. I know this, I would have stamped my feet and raised a stink in Orlando if I was in the war room when they wanted to pick Steven Hunter, Reece Gaines, and Jeryl Sasser. ... Carlos Boozer. The Duke power forward was drafted in the second round last year (2002). I had him ranked as the 4th pick in the draft. While everyone is wondering who Ronald "Flip" Murray is, we had him ranked in the first round last year. He was picked in the second round. ...We were ahead of the game on Zach Randolph (7th on our list) in 2001. Also see 09/26/03 below for pre-damage control on the now 1-9 Orlando Magic.

11/14/03 ...Mad stuff going on. Two weddings this weekend, I'm in one, wife is in other. One is Friday in Stockton, CA., the other is Saturday up at Donner Lake in the snowy Sierra Nevada mountains. That means not as much hoop as I'd like. I did see that Robert Pack has landed on the Nets. This is huge for New Jersey. Understand that Pack is incredibly more efficient than Brandon Armstrong, or the early signs from rookie Zoran Planinic. Trust us on this one. ...I would like to know Rick Adelman's career coaching record on nights when he only plays seven players. I'm all for a tight rotation but seven is stretching it too thin. Gerald Wallace is getting rapped for not stepping up this season but he also hasn't had a chance. You can't judge a guy in 100 minutes. Ditto Darius Songaila. This guy can play. I think Jabari Smith can help too. If bench players must stay glued to the pine, it should be Anthony Peeler, and Rodney Buford.

11/13/03 ...I am fairly sure - no actually I'm positive that Greg Anthony (who I like allot as a basketball analyst) said that the Raptors would make the playoffs in the East. I'll differ. ...Kenyon Martin is back for the Nets. That will help. No need to panic in New Jersey. ...Orlando? I don't know. I like Doc Rivers but I think he is in a impossible position to win based on his roster. Is that Doc's fault? Who lobbied for Ty Lue as the main point man? Shammond Williams is also a NBA backup playing starters minutes. I know this sounds radical (but that is what we do here), I say put the ball in T-Mac's hands and make him the point guard. You have instantly solved your defensive liability with Lue's lack of size. Go with rookie Keith Bogans at the two. Slide Drew Gooden down to three, with Juwan Howard and Andrew DeClercq up front. Come off with Donnell Harvey, Lue, Steven Hunter, Williams, and sign Terence Morris or Nate Johnson.

11/10/03 - ...The Sonics believe they can win 50? That's what the headline says on NBA.com. I'll bet they don't win 30. ...We are tracking worthy All-Stars until the game is played. This monitors the best of the 2003-04 season.

11/09/03 ...9:27 am - Antione Walker has only been to the line 5 times in 252 minutes this season. ...Michael Finley is off to a 33% shooting start to the 2003-04 NBA season. ...Travis Best is 5-30 from the field so far. ...Kevin O'Neil impresses with his fast breaking style for the Raptors. They are getting some freebies in their early offense, a strategy that only makes too much sense. ...Dan Gadzuric has played 91 minutes without a turnover. ...The Nuggets didn't look like a team on Sunday in Toronto. I love Earl Boykins but he, Carmelo Anthony, and Andre Miller need to work together. They were all out trying to score their own points it seemed. The only time Nene touched it was if he rebounded it. Truth be told, Carmelo Anthony hasn't been too impressive as a pro. He is shooting 36% and has more turnovers (21) than assists (17). I suggest Denver might be better for now with Boykins and Miller playing more minutes, and Anthony less. I do applaud the Denver coaching staff for not playing Tskitishvili, and Rodney White. Denver's most efficient rotation would be Miller, Jon Barry, Ryan Bowen, Nene, and Marcus Camby. Off the bench you come with Carmelo, Chris Andersen, Boykins, and Francisco Elson.

11/08/03 ...11:56 PM - So efficiency and stats are overrated, huh? Yet a direct correlation can be made by my current point guard efficiency ratings and the NBA standings. Ranking teams 1-29 by their point guard playing the majority of minutes for their respective team, in the NBA so far this season, the bottom six right now are... 24. Ty Lue - Orlando (1-6), 25. Mike James - Boston (2-3), 26. Eddie House Clippers (1-2), 27. Jason Hart - Spurs (3-4), 28. Milt Palacio, Raptors (3-2). 29. Kirk Hinrich - Chicago (2-4). The combined record of these teams is a pathetic 12-21. The contrast - My top six point guard's teams are a combined 22-14. This group is... 1. Jason Kidd, Nets (3-3) 2. Sam Cassell, Wolves (4-3) 3. Gary Payton, Lakers (5-1) 4. Andre Miller, Nuggets (3-3) 5. Steve Francis, Rockets (4-1) 6. Gilbert Arenas, Wizards (3-3). ...Travis Hansen on the front page of Hawks.com? wow. ...Donyell Marshall has only been to the line three times in over 160 minutes this season. I guess you can get up a little closer on him if he's just going to shoot jumpers. ...Hinrich had nine turnovers but the Bulls beat the Hornets. ...We also talk TV and media here. It is a pet peeve of mine whena TV director misses live action because he is late getting out of a replay. Miami's director did it twice Saturday night. ...Caron Butler looks like he is rushing back from knee surgery because his team is winless. I worry about that. Not that Butler is a savior, but the Heat clearly can use all the help they can get. Saturday night, though, Butler looked like a one-legged player. It reminded me of the late Derek Smith post knee surgery when he was a Kings player.

11/06/03 ...1:27 am. I don't know anything about the NBDL and how they do their draft but I have many thoughts on players not in the NBA that I think can play hoop at the highest level. Here is a 12 man team of dudes that can help. Here we go... #1 Nate Johnson - Louisville. #2 Aaron McGhee - Oklahoma 6'8" 250 SF, PF McGhee is a muscular 6'8 250 man. A really good shooter (82 % ft) which is hard to find, combined with his large size. Right now, he's more a 4 than 3. His three-point stroke is coming along. He's crafty on the block, with a variety of post moves. He was the MVP of the 2002 Portsmouth Invitational. ...#3 Josh Davis - The Wyoming player was waived by the Bulls. He is athletic and he rebounds like a demon. ...#4 Harold Arceneaux - The "Show" is playing for the Coaches vs. Cancer traveling team that played Notre Dame tonight. He was in the Phillipines as recently as September of this year. #5 Cory Hightower - Played in the CBA last season. He can shoot the ball with great accuracy. #6 Joe Forte - The Sonics waived him. #7 - Nakeia Miller - Former Iona shot blocker that took the team to the NCAA tourney. He came off the bench for Jeff Ruland as a Junior - and was barely hyped at all coming into Senior season. As a Senior, First Team All-MAAC - Averaged 15 points (on 67% field goal shooting), 8 boards, and 3 blocked shots per game. He did all that while playing only 25 minutes per game. Earned MAAC MVP honors in the conference championship. He is a swatter! Long arm-span, extremely quick off his feet. Reacts and reloads unbelievably quick. Iona's all-time leading shot blocker. A lefty, he has a knack for making shots in a variety of clever ways. Shot 67% from the line - so he has some touch but will need work to consistently knock down 15 footers - but I believe he can. Miller was in the Sacramento Kings camp last year. #8 - Rodney Bias - Played great in the NBDL last year. #9 - Derek Hood. The Arkansas athlete should be in the NBA. #10 Chris Massie - Tough to handle close to the basket. …Not much of a shot-blocker, but is a strong rebounder with ability to score in the post. …From Arcola, Texas. He averaged 11 boards per game (four offensive), and converted on 60% of his field goals. Named Memphis' team MVP by John Calipari. He can score in the post. #11 - Marquis Estill - Voted by SEC coaches to All-SEC 2nd Team last year. He likes the outside game but takes good care of the ball. He can block shots at a high rate, and seldom takes a bad shot. Not very aggressive offensively. Only scored 11 points per game. Struggles at the line at 56%. Where Estill gets over is with his good foot speed. He scores easily inside by being very skilled around the hoop. ...He is quick to the ball on the glass. ...Takes charges. Great hands. ...Estill does not have a dominant personality. He does exhibit remarkable finesse. Ala, Rasheed Wallace, he can step outside 20 feet and knock down shots. ...Not a dribbler. Can legitimately use both right and left hand around the hoop. His Lefty hook is nice. ...Also likes to dip left shoulder for the right handed hook. #12 - Joe Shipp - Cal. This kid is tough and can shoot. He is a basketball player that understands the game.

11/05/03 ...The season is in full gear and players are dropping like flies, joining the long list of injured cats in the League. Hurt: Jamal Mashburn, Nick Van Exel, Brian Skinner, Caron Butler, Ray Allen, Chris Webber, Jerry Stackhouse, Rick Fox, Curtis Borchardt, Nick Collison, Grant Hill, Elton Brand, Troy Murphy, Tim Duncan, Jumaine Jones, Lawrence Funderburke, Tony Parker, Adrian Griffin, Gordan Giricek, Jonathan Bender, Samaki Walker, Dwyane Wade, and Lucious Harris. !!!!!! That's a lot of hurt players. ...The defense has never been tougher, and shooting percentages stink. Already this season the Timberwolves and Raptors have been held to their franchise low scoring totals. Tonight I watched a team score 60. ...Bill Cartright must be in trouble in Chicago. They've been blown out in three losses. I like Big Bill but the truth is Kendall Gill has been inefficient for years. Losing Jay Williams didn't help, and now Scottie Pippen is hurt. The best possible lineup for the Bulls right now would be 1. Jamal Crawford (40 minutes), 2. Jalen Rose (40), 3. Marcus Fizer (30), 4. Donyell Marshall (36), 5. Tyson Chandler (34). You are solid off the bench up front with Baxter (20), and Curry (20) coming off. Eddie Robinson (20) can be the 8th man in a tight rotation. No minutes for Gill, or Roger Mason Jr., unless it is spot duty. Corie Blount is a safety valve for big-man foul trouble. This rotation would be more efficient. ...We will track the worthy All-Stars until the game is played. One week does not a season make but as a way to monitor the best of the 2003-04 season we offer the All-Stars after week one. (We stress that we know Shaq, Kobe, etc..., will be there.
