Okay –
so media members will be turning out their post season award ballots. They
must be turned in before the season ends. There are no specific criteria to
define the Most Valuable Player vote although all sorts of folks try to
read all sorts of mysterious angles into it. …Let’s break it down. This is
the NBA, regular season, Most Valuable Player vote. Three terms: ‘NBA’ – the entire
league, ‘Regular Season’ – 82
games, and finally ‘Most Valuable Player’. The definition of the root word ‘value’ is
what seems to trip people up. Princeton University defines the word “valuable” as
“having great material or monetary value especially for use or exchange” or
“having worth or merit or value.” …With that said, I like to break it down
to the five best players this season at the five respective basketball
positions. (This will also be my All-NBA First Team). I choose an MVP from
among these five. I believe the best Point Guard was Steve Nash. The best
Two Guard was Kobe Bryant. The best Small Forward played power forward most
of the year – and that is Dirk Nowitzki. The best Power Forward was real tough.
Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, and Carlos Boozer are all right there but give
me Duncan. At Center – I think Amare Stoudemire is the only
choice. …My MVP among this group is Nowitzki. Dallas had a great regular season, and
Dirk was the most efficient player in the NBA. All NBA First Team: Nash,
Bryant, Nowitzki, Duncan, Stoudemire. Second Team: Jason Kidd, Dwyane Wade,
Shawn Marion, Boozer, Marcus Camby. Third Team: Tony Parker, Gilbert
Arenas, Lebron James, Garnett, Yao Ming. …Most Improved Player: In
this order I like Kevin Martin, Andris Biedrins, and Deron Williams. My
choice for Rookie of the Year: Brandon Roy. …Coach of the Year: I’ve got to
give it up for Sam Mitchell. The Toronto Raptors along with the Washington Wizards
and maybe Golden State are the three teams that
exceeded my expectations. …The Defensive Player of the Year in my book is…
Marcus Camby. He had the highest combined number of blocked shots, and
steals. …At BasslineSpin.com we also like to pick the All-Rookie Team – not
so much as a ‘who did best this season’ but more as a predictor of success
down the road. My All-Rookie First Team: Rajon Rondo, Brandon Roy, Rudy
Gay, Craig Smith, and LeMarcus Aldridge.
