NBA Draft Scouting 2002

19. Ryan Humphrey

Notre Dame 6'7" 223 SF, PF - SR.

Ryan Humphrey plays hard. The right-hander was First-Team All Big East as SR. at Notre Dame. ...He is an explosive, athletic SF that hits the glass relentlessly and runs well. Has a 37.5" verticle (5th highest among likely draftees). His end-to-end speed is remarkable. ...Always around the ball with great instincts and timing. He will rebound way out of his area. Likes contact. ...Not a great shooter. Has a herky-jerk motion. ... about 17' range. He did step out to hit some threes - but that is not his game. Plays with remarkable composure. Has an NBA body similar to Lamond Murray, but jumps like Michael Finley. His active game is similar to Malik Rose (although not nearly the FT shooter). Good leaper, almost jumps twice for every other players one. Offensively, uses the ball fake well. Was a High School Parade All-America in football, and a McDonald's All-America in basketball. Foul prone. Humphrey is also unselfish. I like Ryan Humphrey's game. He competes, and has heart. His wingspan is 7 feet, only a half-inch less than Jared Jeffries. ...Says, Humphrey... "Teams have been working me out the last two weeks at the three. I can shoot. That just wasn't really my role at Notre Dame. I know I have the athleticism and quickness. The only real question was my outside jumper. . . It's not the size that matters. It's the heart."
