John Legend – Memorial Auditorium – Sacramento, CA. May 22, 2007 - …John Legend
gave me hope for the age group that is roughly ten years my junior. Musicianship
and artistry is alive undoubtedly – as applied by the 28 year-old Legend. He performed
in front of roughly 3,000 at Memorial Auditorium Tuesday night. Legend
impressed me most with his ability to sing “Ordinary People” with enough
passion that you could believe it was the first time he had sung the standard
of his young catalog. Other highlights for me were “Number One”, Let’s Get
Lifted”, and “Used to Love You”. …Legend
spent the majority of the concert at the piano – grinding out his soulful
self-written tunes. He was cool, laid-back, and totally about the music. The
audience of multi-racial music lovers that came out for the show seemed to thoroughly
enjoy his one hour twenty minute set comprised of songs from his 2005 Grammy
winning Get Lifted album, and it’s 2006 follow up, Once Again. …Emily King
opened the show. I liked her performance mostly because of her good songs, and
funky funky band. While the 21 year-old King still looked a bit uncomfortable
out front as a performer – her talent for writing seemed undeniable.
