NBA Draft Scouting 2002
3. Jay Williams
Duke 6'2" 197 SG, PG - Jr.
Focused. Williams is the Naismith, and Wooden Player of the Year. College Basketball News Player of the Year as well. ...He has the best speed with the ball in the draft. Has 36" vertical. He can remind you of Jason Kidd with his speed. He is a poised, smart, player. Can take over a game with his scoring, either off-the dribble, or with his nice jump shot. He comes off screens and hits a jumper that he gets great elevation on. He'll put a player in the "popcorn machine" and just drain a jumper. ...More than anything, he competes. He has the extra gear that great athletes have. Single-handedly beat Maryland as a sophomore, scoring or creating 10 points in 54 seconds. He can still improve his ball handling, and free throw shooting. His body is solid, and he is a leader. He makes plays in spurts. He's a special player. He rebounds pretty well. If someone challenges him, he still makes a smart play the next time down. ...He is a better scorer than playmaker. At times it's as if his teammates cannot react quick enough to Williams' special speed. Williams will graduate from Duke in just 3 years of schooling. Topnotch. As good a guard prospect as there has been recently.
