The Soulful & Funky Show Yearly Ten Best Albums / CD's

1. John Legend - Get Lifted

This album grew on me as I found myself not skipping tracks on repeated listens. Timing in at 52 minutes, Get Lifted sounded to me, upon release, like a "new guy with an old soul" doing "old soul". Conversely, many of the beats stood out as modern. From the opening of Used to Love U, it is clear that something more was happening with the combination of Kanye West, and John Legend. West basically put Legend, "on". Get Lifted was released on Kanye's Good Music label. Favorite tracks include: It Don't Have to Change, and So High. The former truly captures the feel of a family singing together. Old soul indeed.

2. Van Hunt - Van Hunt

3. Janet - Damita Jo

One of Janet Jackson's best albums is the 2004 release, Damita Jo. Working against it was the aftermath of the Super Bowl performance with Justin Timberlake (if you do not know the story, ... Google it.) From a purely musical standpoint, the album had one more thing working against it. It was front-loaded with mediocre songs that lack melody. It wasn't until track nine of 22 that you hit, Island Life, and from there on... the album flows with really good material. Kanye West and John Legend co-wrote the poppy but effective, I Want You, and Babyface co-wrote and produced Thinkin' Bout My Ex, which should have been a single. Other favorites include Moist, and Like You Don't Love Me (both songs composed by the combo of Janet, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and the Avila Brothers. Tony "Prof T" Tolbert of Lo-Key fame is a co-writer on Moist too.) Just a Little While is a pop/rocker done by Janet with Dallas Austin. Our suggestion; buy the album and start listening at track nine. Damita Jo
