The Soulful & Funky Show Yearly Ten Best Albums / CD's

1. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

More than just the gimmick song, Rehab, Amy Winehouse was a tortured spirit that was truly talented. She co-wrote all the original tracks on this album that was produced by Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson. "Love is a Losing Game" provides an example of 'resignation' in a vocal performance. All singers should have the understanding of how to communicate emotions through a song. Amy Winehouse seemed to have mastered that by her second, and final album (Winehouse died on July 23, 2011.) Winehouse earned street cred with young and old heads for references to Ray Charles, and Donny Hathaway, plus a guest rap from Ghostface Killah. As such, the sound on this album is a curious blend of classic soul from the 1950's or early 60's, complete with lush strings, contrasted with Winehouse's decidedly pointed, and youthful lyrics. Back to Black times-in at just 35 minutes, one of the reasons, it is easy to listen to all the way through. Back to Black [Vinyl]
